A Life Well Lived

William Otto Hechler, lovingly known as “Butch,” “Bil,” and “The Dad,” passed away on June 19, 2025, at the age of 80, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia.

Born on January 3, 1945, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, Bil served his country proudly as a Sergeant and paratrooper in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, “The Screaming Eagles.” He often joked that he jumped out of “perfectly good airplanes,” a story he shared often and with pride.

After leaving the service, Bil worked as a talented car body repairman, known for his hard work, craftsmanship, and quiet dedication. In later years, he settled in Springfield, Missouri to be near family and enjoy the simple joy of watching his grandsons grow.

Even in retirement, Bil continued to connect with others, working at Walmart as a service writer where he enjoyed greeting customers and sharing friendly conversation. He had a deep love for collecting — coins, stamps, baseball cards, and other hidden treasures — and he was happiest wandering antique malls and flea markets in search of the next great find.

Above all, Bil was a devoted husband. He shared 49 beautiful years with the love of his life, Diana (Gambill) Hechler, before her passing in 2017. Their bond was unbreakable and remains a lasting testament to love and partnership.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Ruth Hechler.

He is survived by his son, William Hechler and wife Amy (Glowacki) of Springfield, Missouri, his beloved grandsons, Killian and Logan Hechler — and son, Jason Hechler and wife Lori (Coulter) of Perry, Georgia.

He is also survived by his siblings: Carol Hanson, Bobby Hechler, Nancy Cousart, Linda Cerny, and Lorry Hill.

The family will hold a private memorial to celebrate the life of their father and grandfather.
