Thomas Lemuel Morton

Thomas Lemuel (“Tom” or “Sonny”) Morton, age 78, of Springfield, passed away on April 22, 2026, fittingly on Earth Day—reflecting his deep love of the natural world. Tom was the devoted husband of Susan “Suzy” Morton, with whom he shared 58 wonderful years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his son, Aaron.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Suzy; his daughter-in-law Kim; his children Jennifer (Jonathon), Dale (Katie), Jessica, and Kasee (Dustin), and his eight grandchildren: Kylee, Maddie, Raegan, Clayton, Alex, Blake, Harlow, and Charlotte.

Tom dedicated his professional life to helping others as a housing counselor with the Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation. Following his retirement, he continued his service to the community by volunteering with Catholic Charities.

A man of wide-ranging curiosity, Tom was exceptionally well read across many genres and had a deep appreciation for learning. He was an ardent naturalist who found joy in bird watching, caving, and hiking, and he relished traveling both across the United States and abroad. A devoted sports fan, he especially enjoyed following the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs, and Chicago Bulls, most recently developing a fondness for hockey. His love of music spanned classical, opera, jazz, and classic rock. Tom also had a keen interest in trains, art, and countless other pursuits that reflected his inquisitive spirit.

A visitation will be held at St. Agnes Cathedral on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at St. Agnes Cathedral, followed by a graveside service at Resurrection Cemetery.

Tom will be remembered for his intellect, kindness, and the deep love he held for his family and the world around him.
