James R. Stewart, 82, Nixa, MO passed away on May 22, 2026 in his home. He was born December 26, 1943 in Dallas, TX to Raymond and Mildred Stewart. He served in the Texas Army National Guard where he was awarded the Texas Faithful Service Medal in 1973.
He worked as a machinist in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Texas in Austin for 32 years. He was an avid shooter with muzzle rifles where he received several awards. He was a faithful Christian man and was a founding member of Union Hill Church of Christ; he worked alongside other men of the church to build the current building. He was the owner and operator of the Night Owl Machine shop where he made various items for a company based in Texas. He enjoyed photography, traveling, and being with his family, especially his granddaughter Jessica.
James first met Nancy on a mission trip in Guyana. They married on April 14, 1990 in Springfield, MO. They enjoyed several mission trips to Africa, Thailand, and back to Guyana. They enjoyed many church campouts and traveling in their 5th wheel across the U.S.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mildred Stewart; brothers Weldon and Kenneth Stewart; and sister Doris Bowls.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Stewart; his stepdaughter, Janelle Mabe, husband, Jeff Mabe; his granddaughter, Jessica Lilly, husband Braxton Lilly; his brother, Gary Stewart, wife Moreen of Connecticut and cousin, Ida Nell Pearson, husband Joe of Texas.
A Visitation for James will be held from 11am until Noon on Friday, May 29, 2026 at Union Hill Church of Christ, 865 N. Nicholas Road in Nixa, Missouri. Funeral Services will begin at Noon with Steve Martin officiating. Graveside Services will be held around 2:30pm on Friday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens where James will also receive Full Military Honors.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri.
