Doreen Constance Powell

Doreen Constance (Fisher) Powell was born on 9/25/1927 in Great Bend, KS. Her parents were Verna & John Sylvester Fisher. Her father died when she was 10 weeks old. She had 2 older sisters, Dolores Rusco and Verdean Leroy. Her brother, Donald, died at 18 months old. Verna raised her 3 girls by herself during the Great Depression.

Doreen had good memories of growing up in Great Bend, KS. She would tell us of swimming in the water trough with her grandmother. Doreen graduated from high school in Great Bend, KS and attended Southwestern Bible School in Waxahachie, TX. After completing 1 year of school, she came back to Great Bend and married Byron Quinby Powell. They had 2 sons, John Quinby Powell and David Hugh Powell. The family moved to Springfield, MO for Byron’s new job at the Springfield News-Leader as a printer. Doreen worked as a travel agent and part-owner of another travel agency. She opened her own travel agency, Sunshine Travel, and worked there for over 30 years.

Doreen loved to travel and took many groups on trips. After retiring, Doreen and Byron, moved to Oahu and lived there for 22 ½ years. Many friends and family visited them year after year. Byron passed away in 11/2018. Doreen stayed in Hawaii until 4/2022.

She moved back to Springfield, MO to be with her son David and his wife, Lisa. Doreen went to be with her Lord and Savior on 11/29/2025. From Doreen’s own writing, “When you hear Doreen Powell died, don’t waste a second of sadness for me. This old “House” that I live in will have died, but I will have left planet earth on the greatest trip of my life and already arrived in eternity with my Beloved Lord.” Doreen will be interned with her husband, Byron, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific on Oahu. A small service in the cemetery will be held on 1/12/2026 at 3pm with Rev. Dan Preciado officiating.
