Obituary for Tien Thi Doan

Our beloved mother, Tien Thi Doan, 97, passed peacefully on November 22, 2020 in Springfield, MO. Her beautiful smile and her delightful laughter were priceless and will be truly missed.

Born July 23, 1923, Tien spent her younger years in Hanoi, Vietnam before migrating to Saigon with husband, Khoat, and their three children in 1954. As her family grew, so did her love and joy for her children. However, after spending two decades in South Vietnam, she and her husband again decided to flee their home to ensure safety and freedom for their children in America.

Just before Thanksgiving of 1975, Tien and her family (with ages ranging from six to twenty-five) settled in Springfield, Missouri to start a new life in the USA. Tien became a valuable and amiable member of Springfield’s Vietnamese community, Sacred Heart Church, and St. Agnes Cathedral. She enjoyed singing and could easily do so in French and Japanese. She was a talented cook and avid knitter. Most of all, Tien loved being surrounded by her family, celebrating their achievements, and watching their own families grow. 45 years after arriving, Tien has peacefully left her life in Springfield to join those who passed before her to be with God in Heaven.

Tien was predeceased by her parents, Long Van Nguyen and Ngot Thi Tran, her loving husband, Khoat Van Doan, daughter, Nga, and son, Hung. She is survived by eight children, Hanh (Trang) Pham of Springfield, MO, Bich-Ha (Tam) Nguyen of Springfield, MO, Hoang Doan (Kate) of Webster, NY, Hai Doan (Nga) of Fort Worth, TX, Bich-Hang (Kha) Nguyen of San Jose, CA, Bich-Huyen (Tung) Nguyen of Kansas City, KS, Bich-Huong Doan of Springfield, MO, and Huy Doan (Shelly) of Denver, CO; seventeen grandchildren, Diep Pham, Tram-Anh (Ly Trung) Chuong, Bruce (Torey) Nguyen, Mary (Adam) Metzger, Anthony (Linda) Nguyen, Kristine (Trevor) Ianni, Eric Doan, Clare Doan, Deland Doan, Carmichael Doan, Brandon Doan, Alex Doan, Phu Tran, Tyler Nguyen, Heather Nguyen, Madison Doan, Jude Doan, and Jackson Doan; and eleven great-grandchildren, Ivan Chuong, Katie Nguyen, Noah Metzger, Molly Metzger, Emma Metzger, Greyson Nguyen, Isaac Nguyen, Taz Ianni, Natalie Doan, Emelyn Doan, and Kyle Doan.
