Obituary for Robert William Scott

Robert (Bob) Scott of Springfield peacefully passed away at the age of 91 on October 26, 2022, at The Neighborhoods at Quail Creek in Springfield. He was born on October 23, 1931, in Elwood, IA, to Paul M. and Mary Margaret (Hicks) Scott, moving to Lost Nation, IA at age 12.

He was a 1949 graduate of Lost Nation (IA) High School. After some community college classes and working a few odd jobs around Lost Nation, he worked as a cabinet maker in Davenport, IA before joining Square D Company in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1956. For the next 38 years, he enjoyed a successful career as a production supervisor in the fabrication and assembly of circuit breakers. In 1970, he relocated to Lincoln, NE to open a new Square D production facility. He retired in 1994 and that’s when he really began working.

In retirement, Bob was a relentless volunteer. While still in Lincoln, he coordinated the food pantry effort at St. Paul United Methodist Church in support of the Lincoln Food Bank. He also served as a volunteer at what is now CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln. After moving to Springfield in 2005, he continued his service to others by volunteering at Mercy Hospital, Crosslines of Springfield, and at Wesley United Methodist Church.

An avid bowler, he was ahead of his time in his ability to score with equipment and lane conditions that would leave today’s bowlers scratching their heads. He helped manage the Lincoln Men’s Bowling Association City Tournament and Nebraska Men’s State Bowling Tournament for over 20 years. After retiring from Square D, he served three years as the secretary of the Nebraska Men’s State Bowling Association. He was a member of the Lincoln Bowling Association Hall of Fame and the Nebraska Bowling Association Hall of Fame, both for Meritorious Service.

Above all, Bob’s greatest achievements were those as husband, father and father-in- law, grandfather and great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to just about everyone he met. A child of the Great Depression, Bob didn’t grow up with much but he was determined to make sure his sons had opportunities he had only dreamed of.

He was everyman, yet there was nothing ordinary about him. He was tough-minded, generous, stubborn, loyal, multi-talented yet humble, and always fair, even when in the moment may not have seemed like it. Among his greatest joys were seeing his sons grow and prosper and watching his grandchildren in just about every activity imaginable regardless of where it was or how long it took to get there. To say he’ll be missed is an understatement of immeasurable proportions.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol, whom he met on a blind date at a Louis Armstrong concert in 1961; his sons, Thomas (Kimberley) of Apache Junction, AZ and Stuart (Christy) of Springfield; his five grandchildren, Tyler (Kaitlyn), Ryan (Cara), Avery, Luke, and Will; and his great-granddaughter, Brighton. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Alyce and Marilyn.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Neighborhoods at Quail Creek and especially St. Croix Hospice for their care during Bob’s final weeks.

Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 1 at Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut Street, Springfield. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Michael McIntyre officiating. Burial will be at Rivermonte Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Crosslines of Springfield, 615 N. Glenstone Avenue, Springfield, MO 65802. https://ccozarks.org/donate/?fund-code=4110
