Obituary for Ricky Allen Hopkins

Ricky Allen Hopkins, 58, of Springfield, died Sunday, December 5th, 2021, in Mercy Hospital, after a brief illness.

Ricky was born on February 7th, 1963, in Springfield, where he graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1981. He later studied at Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield.

Ricky, a lifelong Springfield resident, worked as an auto parts distributor driver for many years. His work took him across the state where he became friends with many business owners and car enthusiasts who shared his passion for everything related to cars, particularly drag racing and stock cars. As a fan of the sport, he attended many auto race events across the region and followed the careers of professional drivers and racing teams.

He is survived by his loving mother, Shirley Jean (Elkins) Hopkins, of Springfield; four sisters, Tammie Russell, Sherry McCoy (Kevin), Lori Baxter (Donnie Anderson), and Tracey Cavin (Harlan), a brother, Michael of Columbia, MO; uncles, John Hopkins, of San Antonio, Tlayacapan, Mexico, and Chuck Elkins (Donna), of Springfield; aunts, Linda Wood of Republic, Betty Gurschke, of Franklin, WI, Barbara Wallace, of Springfield; Brenda Hopkins, of Springfield, Edwina Evans, of Springfield, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, Robert Cavin (MerLeesa) of Oaha, HI (children: Izzy & Ziva), Tiffany Cavin of Springfield, Thomas “T” Russell (Rachel) of Springfield, MO, Kimberly Domeny (Brett) of Ozark, MO (children: Luke & Olivia), Cole Russell of Springfield, Talia Baxter (Chase Roberts) of Springfield (child: Mason Roberts), Jessica Pope of Bolivar, MO (children: Jordan, Avery, and Skyler), Kristina Espinosa of Bolivar, MO (children: Tayden & Jaxson), Randy Pope of Springfield, MO, Marriah Hopkins of Rogersville, MO & Giana Hopkins of Columbia, MO; Honorary Brother, Travis Miller. He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Hopkins, who died in 2018.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention a small group of very special lifelong friends that were very near and dear to Ricky and who by his passing has caused heartache that is equally as deep as the weight that his family carries: Kevin Fancher (Nova), Deena Knight (Jim), Brian Campbell, and as previously noted, Ricky’s honorary brother, Travis Miller. These individuals were each a priceless gift that he treasured until his death. Through all the ups and downs, they were always there for him, and he was a better person because of them.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 16th, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield, with a private graveside service held Saturday, December 18th, at Lonesome Hill Cemetery in Phillipsburg, Missouri.
