Obituary for Patricia Jone Gerboth (Barnett)

Patricia Jone (P.J.) Gerboth, 87, died Monday, April 22, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo.

Patricia Jone Barnett was born a fifth-generation Kansan on August 10, 1936, in her grandmother’s farmhouse near Chanute, Kansas. She grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and graduated as salutatorian in 1954 from Derby High School in Derby, Kansas. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Wichita State University in 1958.

She married Clayton Neale Gerboth on February 18, 1958, in Wichita, and they spent several years there before moving to Lynchburg, VA, where Patricia taught elementary school. They moved to Grants, NM, where Patricia continued to teach; to Golden, Colo.; and then in 1972 to Bismarck, ND, where she taught elementary school and worked at the North Dakota State Library as a reference librarian.

Patricia and Clay moved in 1982 to Springfield, where Patricia helped Clay run his restaurant and pub, Casey’s Food 'n' Spirits. Clay died in 2006.

Patricia loved to read, and she taught her daughters to love it in equal measure. She delighted in hunting for, collecting and selling antiques and, later, vintage books. She doted on and loved her three grandchildren fiercely and had a wicked sense of humor. She also loved many dogs and cats during her life and gave many of them happy homes.

She is survived by three daughters, Betsy Sundquist and her husband, Kip, of Rosemount, Minn.; Megan O’Neale of Littleton, Colo.; and Jennifer Gerboth of Richfield, Minn.; three grandchildren, Claire, of Rosemount, and Abigail and Madison, both of Littleton; two stepgrandsons, Tim Sundquist and his wife, Lisa, of Minneapolis, and Eric Sundquist of Atlanta; a brother, David, of Sarasota, Fla.; and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clay, and her parents, Alfred Herbert and Bonnie Marie Barnett.

Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of arrangements; there will be no funeral. Memorials are welcome to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri, 3161 W. Norton Road, Springfield, Mo., 65803.
