Obituary for Michele Kay Ortiz

Michele Kay Ortiz, age 40, of Springfield, Missouri passed away on Friday, May 27th, 2022.

Michele was born on September 18th, 1981, in Springfield, Missouri, to Karen Elizabeth Ortiz and Jose Luis Ortiz.

Michele lost her father in July 2021. This was a terrible loss for everyone but especially for her. Michele had so many talents. She made the most beautiful flower arrangement in her spare time, cooked, baked beautiful cakes, sewed, and made her own clothes because we all knew Michele had her own style! She was one of a kind, she was one of the most hard-working people I’ve ever known, she was working at the age 15. She then went on to be manager at Rue 21 in Branson, Missouri at the age of 20. Michele spent many years working at the Springfield Skatepark. This was one of the defining aspects of her life and she made a lasting, positive impact of multiple generations of skaters. Michele was a gritty worker, she loved and cared for the kids at the park, and she was incredibly generous and kind. Michele became a fixture at the park during its early formative years and went on to become the quintessential “Skatepark Mom”. She will always be remembered for her devotion to skateboarding and her dedication to the community.

Michele then went on to become a manager at Best Western Rail Haven. She had a number one best rating nationwide. She was loved by many there. Michele then followed in her parents’ footsteps by working at the USPS as a part-time mail carrier. Then she worked with her mom at the USPS main post office. She was loved by so many even though it was only for a short time. She was so proud of her accomplishments working alongside our mother.

Michele married Johny Sanders in 2007. They had Shooter Sanders in 2008 and Colten Sanders in 2011. She loved her two boys more than anything. She was artistic, loving, caring, crafty, and thrifty mom. She taught her boys to have hearts of gold, to be respectful and responsible young men. Shooter and Colten will never forget their beautiful, funny, smart, and adventurous mother. They will forever miss and love her. They will always cherish their memories of Michele.

Michele was preceded by her Father, Jose Ortiz; Brother, Andre Andino; Grandma, Pura Ortiz; Grandpa, Jose J. Ortiz; Grandma, Kay Smith; Grandpa, Bill Smith; Uncle, Paul Smith; and Cousin, Jacob Smith.
