Obituary for Mary Therese "Tess" Sable
Mary Therese “Tess” Sable, age 85, of Rogersville, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, in northeast Kansas City, Missouri. Tess was born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, on September 14, 1934, to Karl Borromeo Wieland and Agnes Irene (Stoltz) Wieland. She spent most of her childhood near Hillsboro, Missouri, where her family operated a dairy farm. When she began attending Catholic school, she was one of many Marys, so she came to be known as Tess.
She began college at the University of Missouri, but transferred to Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science in Manhattan, Kansas, when her family moved to nearby St. Mary’s, Kansas, to operate a dairy farm there. While at Kansas State, Tess met Lou Sable, who was a fellow journalism major. Shortly after graduating, the two were married on August 17, 1957. They were married for more than 60 years.
Tess and Lou moved to Springfield, Missouri, in 1966. They became charter members of the new Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Springfield, where they were members for the remainder of their lives. Their son, Jeff, was born in 1972 and their daughter, Angie, in 1973. Tess dedicated much of her life to caring for them. Tess and Lou spent nearly 40 years creating, improving, and living in their dream castle on a small farm between Springfield and Rogersville.
Tess held many and varied jobs through her life, including numerous office positions. She had many passions. She was very active in the Council of Catholic Women (CCW) and had a passion for their work. She held numerous leadership positions at the parish level and at higher levels. Music was important to Tess. She was involved with numerous choirs and musical groups during her lifetime. She loved writing. She was an avid, creative, and talented craftsperson. She applied these skills to crafts such as rubber stamping, macramé, sewing, stenciling, paper making, scrapbooking, potpourri, and making centerpieces. She was known to spend hours working on creative projects for her family and friends, as well as in support of her parish and the CCW.
In 2014, Tess was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent successful treatment. After Lou’s death in 2017, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with her son, and then to northeast Kansas City, Missouri, near her daughter, in 2018.
Tess arranged to continue her vocation of service even in death. She donated her body to the Genesis Program through the Medical Education and Research Institute.
Tess is survived by her son, Jeffrey Joseph Sable, and his wife, Helen, of Memphis, Tennessee, her daughter Angela Marie Boedecker of Kansas City, Missouri; and three grandchildren, Peter Anthony Sable, Karl Joseph Sable, and Noah Scott Boedecker.
Tess was preceded in death by her husband, Lou (2017), and her little brother, Charley Wieland (2019), as well as her parents and her brother, John Paul, who died in infancy.
Tess’s body was cremated following its service through the Genesis Program.
A Visitation will be held from 5:00-6:00pm on Friday evening, April 23, 2021 at Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut Street in Springfield, Missouri where a Rosary Service will be held at 6:00pm.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Springfield with Father Patrick Nwokoye officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Springfield.
