Obituary for Lidy Evarts

Lottie Mae Evarts, better known as Lidy, was the third child of Rufus and Mary Crump. She was born February 7, 1947 in Coquille, OR. Rufus was from a prominent family in S. Carolina. Mary was from a Cherokee family that came from Mexico. She had a brother, Rufus Jr, and a sister, Florence. Her parents later adopted two young girls Kim and Becky. She was raised in Coos Bay, OR where she had a paper route as a child. Living on the ocean, she began a lifelong love of the ocean and lighthouses.

Lidy went to Canyonville Bible Boarding School. She had a little Honda motorcycle that she would put her surfboard on and ride to the beach. She decided early that she wanted to have a large family. After graduation, she attended Pentecostal Bible College in Livermore, CA. In 1965, as a freshman, she met David. They had a rough start when David said, “If you lose 50 pounds, I’ll take you to the dance.” She replied,” If I lost 50 pounds, I wouldn’t have to go with the likes of you!”

They were eventually married on Sept 10, 1966. Three children quickly followed, David Jr in 1967, Maria in 1968 and Danny in 1970. When she was told that having more children would likely kill her, she and David began fostering kids. Over the many years that they had foster children, hundreds of kids passed through their home. In that time, they adopted three more children. Mike, Rich, and Ryan were formally adopted and they tried to adopt Michelle, but they weren’t allowed to.

In 2000, David and Lidy moved to Springfield, MO where they fell in love with Silver Dollar City and were again surrounded by all the kids in the neighborhood. She and David continued to serve in various churches as children’s pastors for several years.

She is survived by her adopted sister Kim, her husband David, six children: David, Maria, Daniel, Mike, Rich and Ryan; 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service for Lidy Evarts at Freedom City Church on Tuesday the 30th at 5pm. The church is located at 1477 N Broadway Springfield, MO.
