Obituary for Leah "Carol" Floyd (Derrick)

Leah “Carol” (Derrick) Floyd, 73, of Nixa, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at The Maples nursing home. She was born on October 14, 1948 in Springfield, Missouri, to Jesse Brown Derrick and Mary Anne (Osredker) Derrick. She attended Springfield Catholic High School and later graduated from Missouri State University with her bachelor’s degree in Social Work. She began working for the State of Missouri in 1970. She worked for the Missouri Department of Social Services and rose to the position of Area Supervisor of the Division of Aging. After 30 years of service to the State of Missouri, Carol retired in 2000 and then worked at Drury University in the Olin Library while daughter, Megan (Floyd) Rolloos, attended school there. Carol went on to work at Hogan Land Title for a time until she was unable to keep working due to complications of breast cancer and related treatment.

Carol married Frank Floyd on October 31, 1976, in Springfield, Missouri. In 1982 they welcomed their daughter, Megan, into the world. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, and her sister, Kathy Derrick, of Parkville, Missouri. She is survived by her daughter, Megan (Floyd) Rolloos, and son in law, Jeromy Rolloos, of Nixa, Missouri; her sister, Karen Pentecost, brother in law, Mike Pentecost, and nephew, Jason Pentecost, of Shawnee, Kansas; her brother, Kevin Derrick, of Arlington, Texas; her sister Dr. Kristi Thaemlitz, and brother in law, Kevin Reed, of Humboldt, Texas; brother Dr. Kelly Derrick, sister in law Melissa Derrick, and their three daughters of Killeen, Texas; and nephew, Matthew Derrick and partner Nancy Lloyd of Kansas City, Missouri, as well as many other beloved family members and friends.

Carol loved to cook, travel, scrapbook, and make crafts. She was an avid gardener with beautiful flower beds and a bountiful garden. Carol frequently canned numerous quarts of garden-fresh vegetables. She loved to entertain at home, and she always made sure everyone had more than enough of her delectable cooking. Most of all, Carol enjoyed being with people, talking with and helping others, and being an extra Mom to all who needed a mother figure or even just a big hug. Her daughter’s friends all called Carol Mom. Carol said that being a mother was one of her greatest achievements. She was selfless, kind, and loving to all. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
