Obituary for Kevin Michael Nelson

Kevin M. Nelson, 67 of Springfield MO, formerly of Sioux City, IA passed away on June 23, 2022, at his home in Springfield, of cancer.

Kevin was born in Seoul, Korea, because he was an orphan, he was given the birthdate of December 22, 1954. He was adopted by Herbert and Leola Nelson at the age of 20 months. Kevin lived in several Iowa towns growing up, ending up in Sioux City, IA. He graduated from East High School in 1973. On July 2, 1976, he was united in marriage to Janie Courey. They had one son, Kory. He was employed at Sunshine Foods, Burke Engineering, Gateway and retired from Gerkin Window and Doors in March of 2022.

Kevin was a gifted musician, playing the piano by ear. He played for many different venues, The Royalheirs Quartet, many weddings, funerals, nursing homes and a band with his brother called Pardon. He led the Praise Team at his church for many years.

Kevin was also a 4th degree black belt in Taekwondo, a Sunday School teacher, Awana leader and an Upward basketball referee. He and his wife recently moved to Springfield to be close to their son and family.

Kevin is survived by his wife of 46 years, son Kory and his wife Cami, one grandson Bently, two granddaughters, Karmindy and Aria, all of Nixa, MO. Two brothers, Arden of Sarasota, FL and Randy (Muriel) of Pender, NE, two brothers-in-law, Fred (Linda) Courey of Sioux City, IA and Larry (Barb) Lykins of Des Moines, IA. Two sisters, Linda (Tracy) Stone of Holt, MO and Holly (Gary) Dominick of Sioux City, IA, one sister-in-law Julie Nelson of Sioux City, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Kevin is preceded in death by his parents, brother Barry Nelson and an infant brother, Michael.

Visitation will be July 17th from 6 to 8pm. Funeral service will be at 11am, July 18th, all at Southern Hills Baptist Church: 4301 Old Lakeport Road, Sioux City, IA.

Internment has taken place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
