Obituary for Dr. John David Hume

John D. Hume passed from a life like no other on November 18, 2023. Born December 2, 1949 in Springfield, MO to Dr. Jack and Ann Hume, John attended Catholic Schools graduating from St. Agnes H.S. in 1967. He received his undergraduate degree from Drury College where he pledged Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. For many years he went on annual float trips with Dr. Mark Martin and other frat friends. Following in the footsteps of his father Dr. Jack Hume, and Grandfather Dr. Eugene Hume, John earned a DDS in Dental Surgery from UMKC in 1975.

John practiced general dentistry for over 42 years before retiring in 2017. Passionate about his profession, he was an affiliate and officer of several dental groups including: UMKC Dental Alumni Association; President of Springfield Dental Society in 1986 of which an Outstanding Service Award was named for him in 2011; American College of Dentists; American Dental Association; Dentist of the Year in 1992; International College of Dentists when he was made a Fellow in 1993; President of Missouri Dental Association 1994-95 which he received the MDA Distinguished Service Award in 2007. John played an integral role in forming MDIS insurance service for all Missouri dentists and he served the organization as first president from 1991-95.

John was always very generous with his resources and time by volunteering his services to the Kitchen Dental Clinic; Give Kids A Smile Day; Springfield Public Schools Referral Program; and Special Olympics. For many years he served on the Board of Directors of The Boys & Girls Clubs and supported the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. During his retirement years, he took road trips from one end of the country to the other and traveled over-seas with family and friends as well as fun times spent at the cabin on Table Rock Lake. He was a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution and volunteered at the History Museum on the Square. He loved listening to Rock-n-Roll music, especially to the Lucky Boys band along with his lifelong friends. As in the words of Hans Christian Anderson; “Where Words Fail, Music Speaks.”

John is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife and good friend since first grade, Marianne Davidson aka Dee Dosch and her family; his step-son J.P. Stockton, Amy and their six children; sons Jack and Sean Hume and their mother Shelley; siblings Paul and Vicki Hume, Terry Touhey, Mike Hume, his twin sister Jana and Malcolm Hukriede, Karen Ross, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends who celebrate his life with a “smile.”
The family wishes to thank you for your thoughts and prayers: to Sutton In-Home Senior Care and especially to his doctors and the staff at Close to Paradise and Phoenix Hospice for their attention to John’s needs and to all those who help with the trying job of memory caregiving.

Visitation will begin at 10 am Friday Nov. 24, 2023 with the funeral Mass to begin at 11 am all at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2200 W. Republic Rd. followed by burial service at Resurrection Cemetery, 4677 W. Division.
