Obituary for James L. Shields Sr.

James Lee Shields, Sr., age 94, went to be with our Lord peacefully at home in Ozark, Missouri surrounded by loving family on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

He was born in Carthage, Missouri, October 28, 1928, to Henry Mearl and Gladys (Cupp) Shields. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, siblings Bill Shields (Frankie), Betty Joe Shields, Mary Ann Winslow (Gene), Norma Gail Shields and Fern Laffoon (Hubert). He is survived by his children Rita Cohen, James Jr. (Mary Zoe), Jerry (Susan), Tim (Jackie), Malinda Nakamura (Lee Plemmons), Anthony (Maria) and Robin Graham (Cary), nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. He also leaves behind many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Jim was raised in the Kansas City, Missouri area. At 17, he entered the Navy during World War II participating in Operation Crossroad. He was proud of being an atomic veteran and Trusted Shellback.

In 1951, he met and married his wife of 59 years. Jim worked many years in the paint manufacturing industry. He and Marie raise their family in the Springfield area. He enjoyed fishing, singing but playing games with family and friends was what he loved most! Jim will be missed by so many that loved him. Godspeed Sailor.

He will be interred at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, 5201 S. Southwood Rd, Springfield, Friday January 13, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Elwood United Methodist Church, 1225 N. State Highway AB, Springfield, Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
