Obituary for James D. Bryant

James Dale Bryant, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on September 6th, 2022 at the age of 75. The son of Wilbur Edwin Bryant and Gertrude Hester Eldridge Bryant. James was born in Columbia, Missouri on June 6, 1947.

James loved his family, food, canoeing, fishing, the Cardinals, reading, card games, a glass of bourbon, music, nature, and animals. He dragged his daughters on many high adventures, three-day float trips, visiting historical sights, and hunting with his ‘non-hunter’ daughters and his favorite bird dog, Saratoga Jean.

He had really expressive eyes that could convey his inner gentleness or an ornery mood. He was very smooth and thoughtful with his words. “What you do for that color”. He had a unique way of appreciating people. Even in the end, his care team felt his sincere gratitude. A fedora and/or sunglasses made him the sharpest dressed patient.

James attended college to get his designation of Chef. He worked with Kansas City Gourmet Catering Company and as a Food Service Director at many colleges across the midwest. One of Chef James' highest honors was being the head Chef at the Savoy hotel of Kansas City. Harry Truman was a regular there and his favorite dish was Chef James’s catfish. He was known for his beautiful table design, delicious food, and chainsaw ice sculptures. One of his favorite jobs was in Muskogee, Oklahoma at Bacone College, a predominantly Native American University. Always a friend and mentor to the students, he cared about the injustices and plight of the indigenous people. After he retired, he enjoyed working with the Amish to grow his selected seeds, bringing farm-to-table fresh produce to Columbia, Mo.

He is survived by his two daughters, Elizabeth 'Beth' Bryant-Clark and Laurel Bryant, his two beloved grandsons, “James Ambrose” Layton and “Joshua” Ryan Clark and his former spouse and mother of his daughters, Louise Lathrop. He loved being a big brother to Debbie Dupree and deeply respected his brother-in-law Steve Dupree. He appreciated his son-in-law Louie Layton. He is meeting his parents in heaven, his brother, Edwin Bryant, and other family members. He loved his cousins and memories at the Ausburn Century Farm and the lake. His nieces and nephews were so special to him.

Services will be held at Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home on October 15th at 1:00 pm, followed by a celebration of life at 1014 S Weller Ave.
