Obituary for Herman William Galli Jr.

Herman W. Galli Jr

Herman went peacefully in God’s arms on Tuesday March 14th, 2023, from complications of a stroke. He fought very hard to make a recovery however he was not able to overcome the many associated obstacles.

Dear son of the late Herman Sr. and Patricia Galli. Beloved fiancé of Kathi Kessinger. Brother to Yvonne and Gary Tittel, Carol and the late Terry Wente, Patrick, and Lisa Galli. Dearest Uncle of Angela (Jacob) Schmucker, Brian Tittel, Ryen (Brandon) Brownell, Allison Wente, Michael (Teresa) Galli, Krissey Galli. Great Uncle to Brandon and Camilla Tittel, Cooper Brownell, Karson Wente and Lily Heck, Mila, Francesca and Julianna Galli, Kallie and Kolton Anderson Garrett and Donovan Schmucker; cousin, and lifelong friend to many, Especially Kathi and her family Aimee and her children Isabelle (Issy) and Haley, Adam Kessinger and his children Olivia, Tucker, London, Lane and Hunter and his furry friend (Bear).

Herman was very passionate about his church, St Bernadette, his family, firefighting, emergency response & rescue, storm chasing, his baseball Cardinals, Nascar, fishing, music of all genres, and was also an amateur photographer and as one of his friends put it, “he had a wonderful knowledge to share about many, many topics.”

Herman William Galli, Jr. was born in St. Louis, MO on January 9, 1951, and he passed away on March 14, 2023. He was the eldest of four children born to Herman Sr. and Patricia (Vogel) Galli. He grew up in Bellefontaine Neighbors, Mo, attending Our Lady of Good Counsel grade school, and Rosary High School, class of 1969. Herman attended community college and worked at Banking, Accounting, Sporting Goods Buyer for Witte Hardware Corporation, the wholesale distributor for Central Hardware. He ran for alderman in Bellefontaine Neighbors, active in politics, Jaycees, and the church.

Herman has always had a love for any type of race car even at a very young age. He enjoyed learning about them, looking at them and attending races. Later Herman got the chance to become involved with his Brother In-law Terry in racing as he became part of the pit crew. By taking on this task Herman got the chance to travel across the US and Canada.

He resided with both his parents until the passing of his father in March 1988. Traveling to southern Missouri for various fishing tournaments, he fell in love with the people and area. In 1998 he convinced his mother that they needed to sell the family home and move to Hickory County. He continued to live with his mother on the grounds of the Hickory Ridge Resort and they became active at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Hermitage, Missouri. Herman worked as a salesman for Low-E insulation while volunteering with the Wheatland Fire Department, eventually taking the position of the Fire Chief at Wheatland Fire Department. His mother became ill in 2011, and caretaking fell into his hands as his siblings remained in the St. Louis area. As terminal illness became a reality for his mother, he found support through many at his church, but mostly from his friend Kathi Kessinger. Through that period of care, their bond became something more. Upon his mother’s passing in August of 2011, Herman was forced to leave Hickory Ridge, and moved with Kathi at her home in Wheatland, MO. Eventually Kathi moved to Springfield and Herman moved to Wheatland, but the two remained very close.

After his last illness in 2019, Herman was not able to live on his own and moved to Springfield with Kathi and her extended family and his new fur baby (Bear). He decided to retire, and by Christmas announced his engagement to Kathi. Herman later took a position with The Index as a reporter and photographer which he thoroughly enjoyed, always talking about such a great group of friends and co-workers and he loved the opportunity to work in the community he was so passionate about.

All along while he and his fellow parishioners were enjoying the formation of small groups concentrating on education and prayer, Herman was asked by Father Ben if he would be willing to represent St Bernadette Church with the diocese in Jefferson City. He would be meeting with other parish volunteers to share ideas and processes working on ways to improve learning about God and the church. “Teaching about the Good Lord and bringing people into his Church” had been a lifelong dream of his. Unfortunately, Herman passed away before accomplishing his dream.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Herman’s memory to the local Volunteer Fire Department of your choice or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

There will be a visitation from 10:00 am to 10:30 am; a rosary from 10:30 am to 11:00 am; a Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 am with burial to follow at Clark Cemetery in Hickory County, MO.
