Helen Burch, 98, of Springfield, passed away from natural causes on August 11, 2020 in the care of Woodland Manor.

Helen Elizabeth was born on March 28, 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri to Robert Sullivan and Edna (nee Carter) who went on to have six children: Charles, James, Alice, Helen, Mary Jane, and Bob who is a veteran of WWII. Helen was a capable woman who knew her own mind. She began working as a bookkeeper before she finished high school and attained her pilot’s license. Helen was a devout Catholic. She was married to John Wayne Burch on September 6, 1947, in Springfield, Missouri at St. Agnes Cathedral where the couple served as lifelong members.

During her 46 year marriage to John, they raised two sons, David and Charlie, and lost one son, Patrick, at birth. Nellie, as John called her, was his lifelong partner and the two ran a machine repair shop in Springfield for over 25 years. Nellie enjoyed playing her prized grand piano, studying history, sewing quilts, and even writing her own short stories. Helen was well-read and could always carry on an interesting conversation on a wide variety of topics. Her home was the gathering place for many family events. And so, she leaves behind many who will cherish her memory.

Helen is survived by her sons, John David (Mitzi) and Charles (Glenda); her brother Robert; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and their children.

Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 17, at St. Agnes Cathedral. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery under the direction of Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home.

Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Agnes Cathedral.

The family would like to thank Haven Hospice, Woodland Manor, with special appreciation to Mary Ann Minich.

In lieu of flowers please send contributions to The Missouri Council of the Blind at 2713 N Kansas Expy, Springfield, MO 65803. and/or to The Saint Agnes Cathedral at 533 S Jefferson Ave, Springfield, MO 65806.
