Obituary for Gail "Gene" Eugene Summers

Gail Eugene ‘Gene’ Summers was born March 8, 1941. He died on October 29, 2023 after a valiant struggle with multiple health problems. He attended St. Agnes High School and graduated from Drury College where he met his wife, Patsy Jo Shean. They were married in 1964.

Gene was humble, conscientious, and caring. He was part owner of S & S Insurance, a Great Southern Insurance Vice President, owner of GP Properties, and a partner in RSL. Throughout his life he was always involved with church, family, and his community. Gene served on the Springfield Little Theatre Board, History Museum Board, Drury Alumni Council, Sigma Phi Epsilon Alumni Board, Twin Oaks Tennis Committee, and various other committees. He received numerous insurance awards as a commercial lines salesman, Drury University Distinguished Alumni, Frannie Award, and Catholic High School Outstanding Alumni Award.

Gene was an avid sportsman, hunting and fishing from Alaska to Mexico. He enjoyed playing tennis and spending time with projects in his workshop. Gene traveled extensively, from Tahitian Islands to Australia and Mexico. He enjoyed visiting museums and was a lifelong learner. His life was well spent. He never found a challenge too great to tackle.

He was devoted to his family and adored his grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Anna Grace. He is survived by his wife, Patsy; their two children, Gena (Eric) Thompson and Wes (Amanda) Summers; grandchildren Dylan (Chloe) Thompson, Sarah Jo, Megan, and Bethany Summers; his brother Bill (Julie) Summers; and a brother-in-law Mike (Jeri) Shean.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30am Saturday, November 4, 2023 at The Downtown Church 413 E. Walnut Street. An informal celebration will follow with conversation, food, and fellowship.
