Obituary for Evelyn LaPierra Nichols (Shipman)

Evelyn L. Nichols passed from this world on September 30, 2022. Evelyn was the daughter of Edwin and Evelyn Shipman and was born on August 22, 1940, in San Diego California. Evelyn spent most of her childhood on the west coast and followed in her father’s footsteps and joined the Navy. While she served in the Navy she met her future husband Richard L. Nichols. Evelyn married Richard on September 14th, 1969.

Evelyn's passion for learning led her to careers as a medical technologist, a reading specialist, and a teacher. She held degrees from Old Dominion University and Southwest Missouri University. She loved to read and up to her death read 2-3 books a week. She was a member of South Street Christian Church for over 40 years where she volunteered in the children's education department. Over the years, Evelyn also volunteered with Crosslines, Mercy Hospital, the Doula Foundation and CASA.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Richard. She is survived by daughters Aimee Newman and husband Jeff and Keri Nichols and partner Scott Mitchell.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Council of Churches of the Ozarks-Safe to Sleep or South Street Christian Church.

Services for Evelyn will be held on Tuesday, October 4th at South Street Christian Church in Springfield at 4:00 pm. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until service time. A Committal Service with Military Honors will be Thursday, October 6th at 10:00 am at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.
