Obituary for Edgar Dewitte Hall
On March 18th, 2022, Ed Hall, 91, of Springfield, Missouri died and went to be with God in Heaven. Ed was a wonderful husband, father, friend, and uncle. He lived for two weeks after a diagnosis of adrenal cancer.
He was born on June 25th, 1930, in Bluejacket, Oklahoma to Joe and Ruby Hall and graduated from Bluejacket High School in 1948.
Ed proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1950-1954 aboard the USS Helena CA75. He joined the San Diego Fire Department in 1956 and retired in 1980 as a Captain at the age of 50 saying, “it was a job for younger men.” He was very proud to be part of the family of San Diego fireman, they were all very close, and several have remained friends. He was famous for his potato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch when he was scheduled to cook.
In October 1965, Ed married Barbara Wayne and they moved from San Diego to Alpena, Arkansas where they bought a 44-acre farm and raised cattle for 5 years. That is when they found a love for barnwood and soon after started a new business, “Barnwood ECT”, creating one-of-a-kind country items, traveling in their motor home, and exhibiting in juried craft shows across the US. Each show broadened their circle of friends and memories for the 17 years they were in business.
Ed enjoyed playing cards; particularly at the fire station, golf, bowling, pool and excelled at ping pong. He also enjoyed fishing and camping; especially in the White Mountains in Arizona with his firemen buddies and each April they made a trip to Las Vegas together. He was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed watching all sports on TV. He also liked reading, crossword puzzles, working in his vegetable garden and traveling.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Springfield, Missouri.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Ruby Hall of Westville, Oklahoma; a sister, Allene Patton of Lawton, Oklahoma; grandparents, William Edgar and Lucinda Rentle and Jasper Newton and Joanna Hall all of Bluejacket, Oklahoma.
In addition to his wife Barbara of almost 57 years, he is survived by his sons, John Hall and wife April and Jim Hall, both of San Diego, California, numerous nieces and nephews and family with whom he shared life-long close attachments. Ed will be greatly missed by all his family including his loyal Border Collie, Sophia. The family would also like to thank the team of caregivers at Haven Hospice for the great care, comfort and support given to both Ed and Barbara; you are truly the best.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Friday, March 25th, 2022, with Father Daniel Belken celebrating. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery shelter at 1:00 pm.
If desired, memorial donation may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
