Obituary for Doreen Marie Trevino

Doreen Marie Trevino was born July 30, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Bernard James McKairnes and Anna May McKairnes. She is the firstborn daughter of two daughters from the union of beloved father and mother Bernard and Anna McKairnes. Doreen Marie went to be with the Lord in the arms of Jesus on May 5, 2023, in Kingwood, Texas.

Growing up in Philly, Doreen Marie spent her time raised in a charming row house with fond memories of playing in the great outdoors and enjoying block parties. One of the best things that ever happened to Doreen Marie as a child was the love of a furry friend. When her dad brought a Border Collie puppy home, it was love at first sight. Her dad asked her to name him. Doreen Marie called him “Patches” because of his fur colors made a little patch over his eyes. Patches was her buddy and when he got lost one day outside and didn’t return, it was pain felt for a lifetime. But the happy memories of her precious dog Patches held on stronger than the pain and was a source of constant joy to reminisce.

Additionally, Doreen Marie’s childhood home was a haven for creativity and individuality. It was in her home that her passion and love for art and creativity was birthed. Originally, her introduction to art projects such as crafts was due to boredom especially during summer months. Doreen Marie’s father would never agree to the idea of boredom among his children. He wanted his kids to learn how to expand their imagination, find something to do, and play independently in the basement. Thankfully he did, and Doreen Marie found what she was meant to do throughout her life.

Doreen Marie and her family moved to Houston, Texas in the early 1980s. She then settled in her new hometown called Humble, Texas located northeast of Houston. She remained in Humble for most of her adult life, and then eventually ended up moving to the next city over, Kingwood, where she stayed for the remainder of her days. It was in her new hometown of Humble, however, that she continued her love of art and creativity with this time on a professional level. Even after successful years of being a makeup artist and wardrobe stylist, her first love of art was never lost.

Doreen Marie was meant to be an artist and business owner. In the early 1990’s, she made a pivotal artistic endeavor and rented a booth in a quaint little house turned vintage and antique shop called Spruce Goose. This was in her beloved Humble Texas. She took those lessons she learned at Spruce Goose and expanded her craft to the education world. Doreen Marie became an art and drama theater teacher at her daughter’s school called the King’s Church Academy. She taught and inspired K5 – 12th grade students to find their inner artist and express themselves on stage. Doreen Marie produced a spring production at The King’s Church Academy and future productions as well as further art teaching at Home Run a large Homeschool program her daughter was part of for a time.

In 2012, Doreen Marie took a leap of faith and started an online business through Etsy. Her shop was filled with all the things she loved to share the most with others. She loved to share artwork made from her own hands and vintage home décor pieces she had restored and spruced up. She successfully maintained the business and sold through her shop for many years even close to the Lord calling her home.

The greatest love Doreen Marie ever knew was the deep love of her Savior Jesus Christ. As a child her dear grandmother pointed her to the cross and as an adult she came home to the loving family of God. The protection and prayers that surrounded her till she surrendered to grace was felt by her for years. It was many moments and encounters with God that turned her heart including a dramatic car crash in her early 20’s. She knew the Lord was calling her to serve him. Doreen Marie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in her early 20’s committing her life 100% to her faith. She received her ordination as a minister on March 5th, 1989. Doreen Marie poured her heart into ministry hosting Bible studies in her apartment where her future husband Arvis Trevino walked through her front door at one of those meetings.

Faith in God and a heart for ministry brought Arvis and Doreen Marie together. On September 21, 1990, they were married in Humble, Texas. Their greatest gift came a little less than 2 years after their marriage with their daughter Naomi Noel Trevino born on September 2, 1992. Doreen Marie’s greatest investment was to her daughter Naomi. It was her heart’s desire to spend years praying and mentoring her daughter in the ways of the Lord. Even to the very end of Doreen Marie’s life, she considered this her greatest accomplishment.

Doreen Marie along with her husband Arvis and daughter Naomi were faithful members of The King’s Church in Humble Texas in the early 1990’s to the year 2000. Doreen Marie and her husband especially connected with the church’s leader Pastor Steve Teel. He was a mentor and role model in the faith for her family. Her and her family served and volunteered in the church with food pantry ministry, nursing home ministry, community outreach, singing in the choir, and helping the church family with whatever was needed. The King’s Church was a second home and wonderful community for Doreen Marie with friendships formed there lasting a lifetime. When Pastor Steve Teel passed on July 31, 2000, it was a loss felt deeply. Doreen Marie and her family vowed to continue the work started during their time at The King’s Church. That promise was kept as Doreen Marie, her husband, and daughter volunteer and served in the community and communities beyond Houston including disaster recovery assistance after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana.

One of the joys of Doreen Marie’s life was her daughter Naomi Noel Trevino. It was important to raise her daughter in the teachings of the Bible. She gave her daughter her first Bible when she was 2 and would read the Bible stories over and over to her. Her heart and soul never forgot the most beautiful moment when she heard her daughter Naomi Noel pray the salvation prayer at age 2. She knew her daughter accepted Jesus into her heart. It was also at age 2, that Doreen Marie discovered her daughter’s love of dance especially ballet. She encouraged her daughter’s interest in dance and took her to her first ballet class at the age of 2. For many years to come, Doreen Marie attended all her daughter’s recitals, took her to dance classes, helped her with her costume and makeup, and celebrated with her daughter every year as she advanced in her dance schools.

Additionally, a solid education rooted in Christian values was a deep desire that Doreen Marie had for her daughter. She was there every morning to give a hug and a homemade lunch to her daughter each school year. For 3 years in between attending schools, Doreen Marie homeschooled her daughter. She was heavily involved with making sure her daughter learned well and received the best education possible.

Beyond her daughter’s education and love of dance, Doreen Marie was a support system to her daughter and provided sound life advice. In the times her daughter was struggling with peers at school or making friends, she was a listening ear. Doreen Marie imparted the best of her wisdom to her daughter including the ever-important body image conversation as her daughter was getting older. She assured her daughter that everything would work out and to trust the process. Over the years, many wonderful memories were created with her daughter such as baking, doing crafts, dancing, laughing, sharing a love for the fall season, appreciating quaint homes, and watching movies together.

Doreen Marie is survived by her husband Arvis Trevino, her daughter Naomi Noel Trevino, her mom Anna McKairnes, her sister Karen McKairnes, and her brother David Reeves. She is reunited in heaven with her mentor, best friend, and loving father Bernard McKairnes and her dear friend and mentor Sue Perkins Winder. Both recent losses were deep cuts to her heart, and she looked forward to them as well as loved ones again. Though her sudden and tragic final months with stage 4 cancer persisted, her faith never wavered. She received her full healing with no more pain and sickness.

The legacy of faith Doreen Marie Trevino left behind will never be forgotten. The impact of her passion for Christ and a heart to always minister to others the love of Jesus will inspire many for years to come. Those who remain will carry on in the journey of life knowing that God is the author and finisher of our faith.
We know our Heavenly Father said when she walked through the pearly gates, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
