Obituary for Dane K. Peterson

Dane Peterson, age 68, passed away January 9, 2024 at Mercy Hospital after suffering a heart attack while playing pickleball, one of his favorite pastimes.

Dane was born in Springfield, Missouri on June 13, 1955 to Clyde and Agnes Peterson. He received an undergraduate degree from Missouri State University and a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology-Quantitative Methods from Southern Illinois University. He was a faculty member in the College of Business at Missouri State University for 37 years. At MSU, Dane was honored as a College of Business Dean’s Distinguished Research Fellow from 2002-2009, and he received the MSU Excellence in Research Award in 2004. Dane also was a prolific researcher, publishing many articles alone and with collaborators on the topic of business ethics. In 2004, Emerald Publishing awarded him an Emerald Literati Research Award for outstanding contributions of authors and reviewers. Dane retired in 2022, becoming an Emeritus Professor of Information Technology and Cybersecurity. Except for the time he was a graduate student and during a short period teaching at Georgia Tech University, Dane was a lifelong resident of Springfield.

Dane had a passion for sports. He played basketball and baseball as a child and for Hillcrest High School as a teenager. As an adult, his passions were tennis, racquetball, golf, and pickleball, which he played regularly with his friends. Dane was also a devoted dog owner, adopting and lovingly caring for older dogs that would typically be considered “unadoptable.”

Dane was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his three brothers, Kent, Rex and Chris.

A memorial commemorating Dane’s life will be held 2:00pm Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut Street in Springfield, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dane's memory to the charity of the donor's choosing.
