Obituary

CHARLES DUDLEY MARTIN, who practiced law in Springfield Missouri for 50 years, passed away at home on April 11, 2020, at the age of 86.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Kay, his son Ross Adam Martin (Laura), his daughter Deborah Kay DeMan (Robert), and his two granddaughters, Brianna and Sophia DeMan.

Dudley went into the practice of law in order to help people. His most rewarding work was serving those who couldn’t afford the justice they deserved. He was also very proud of his work for Robert Stroud, “The Birdman of Alcatraz”.

Dudley was civic minded and served on numerous boards. One of his favorites was the Greene County Library Board because Dudley never saw a book he didn’t like. He was also passionate about politics and served the Democratic Party throughout his life.

The family hopes that those who knew Dudley will join them in remembering his quick wit, intellect, and the good times they shared.

No wake, visitation, or funeral is planned. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make memorial contributions in Dudley’s name to The Alzheimer’s Association, 3645 South Avenue Springfield, Missouri, 65807.

When my husband Jerry Mee and I moved to Springfield in 1965, Kay and Dudley were the first to give us a warm welcome and to invite us into their home. We were strong friends for a number of years and then family and business intervened. I have the upmost respost for both Kay and Dudley. We "touched base" periodically for some time, but not recently. My condolences to Kay and the family. I enjoyed the video very much. Blessings to all. Virginia Mee

Dudley and I worked together for 15 years. I learned a lot from practicing with Dudley and I appreciate that. He was an interesting fellow and was fun to be around. Julia and I send our sincere condolences to Kay, and Ross and Debbie and their families. May he rest in peace.

Charles "Dudley" Martin was one of my favorite Democrats. Soon after I moved to Springfield in 2001, I became active in Democratic Party organizations and Dudley and his wife, Virginia, welcomed me at events and made me comfortable. I was impressed with his humor, wit and wisdom, and the distinct stylish clothes he wore. I also admire the few lawyers I met who defended those in need despite their poverty. David (Scoop) Peery
