Obituary for Cecil Willene Wunderlich

Cecil Willene (Ewing) Wunderlich, age 96, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020 in Kansas City, Mo. She was born in Kellogg, Idaho on September 5, 1924 to Cecil Alexander and Phoeba Cloe (Chambers) Ewing. Her family moved to Gorin, Missouri for a short time and then later to St. Louis, Missouri where Cecil grew up attending Irving Elementary School and later graduated from Central High School. After high school she worked for a bank in St. Louis. Following a courtship with Eugene Lester Wunderlich, they were married on October 19, 1946.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005, and all her siblings: Donald Ewing, William Ewing, Maxine Handing, and Zelda Hearn.

Cecil was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s UCC in Manchester, Mo., where she worked in the Children’s Nursery, was a member of the Women’s Group and enjoyed participating in weekly workshops where she and others created a variety of handmade items for the church craft bazaar. She loved her church and the great friends she made there over the years. Cecil was very active in her community in Job’s Daughters, the Mother’s Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She later worked in the cafeteria at Parkway School. She enjoyed bowling in a league with friends, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, attending many games over the years. Even after moving to Kansas City, where being a Cardinal fan wasn’t particularly popular, she remained true to the Redbirds keeping current with games and players.

Cecil and Gene had many wonderful lifetime friends, vacationing with them to Table Rock Lake and traveling together all over the country.

Family was of utmost importance to Cecil. Just as she took care of her community, she was always there to help take care of family members, including her husband, parents, and siblings when they had difficult times due to health issues.
As the family grew with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she loved when everyone got together for vacations to the lake. The first dinner meal of the week was always Cecil’s famous mostaccioli, a tradition that her daughter and daughters-in-law have continued to this day. After Gene died, and living by herself in Ballwin, she always kept tabs on what all her kids and grandkids were up to. She was also very independent, taking care of her home and driving into her late 80’s while never complaining about anything. Her friends and family all knew her as contented, kind, and always more concerned with others than herself. Whenever you would ask her how she was doing she would quickly respond “I’m Okay!”

After selling her home in Ballwin she moved to the Kansas City area to live closer to her daughter, Carole. She lived at Wexford Place Independent Living for three years and New Mark Care Center for the past four years. During this time, Cecil was spoiled immensely by Carole’s daily visits, special treats and cheerful decorations in her room. Carole also made sure to frequently take and send pictures to other family members while keeping everyone up to date about Cecil. A recent highlight of Cecil’s life was the celebration of her 95th birthday last year when her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were there to share it with her.

Cecil is survived by her daughter, Carole Burge (Gary), her sons Keith Wunderlich (Sheryl), Paul Wunderlich, (Lynn); grandchildren Kevin Burge (Tracy), Laura Weir (John), Brad Wunderlich (Chelsea) Tracy Nunez (Jeremy); Heidi Champ (Joel), Ted Wunderlich (Katy), Emily Wunderlich (Prem); great grandchildren Hunter and Haley Burge, Austin Acord, Cheyenne, Denver and Carson Weir, Charli Wunderlich, Kara Nunez, Isabelle, Isaiah, Evelyn and Thomas Champ, Charlotte, Sam and Juliet Wunderlich, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

For the safety of everyone during this pandemic her services will be private for immediate family only at the St. John’s UCC Cemetery in Manchester, Missouri.

The family would like to thank the staff of New Mark Care Center for the loving care they provided Cecil for these past four years and especially during these most recent months with all the difficulties encountered due to the pandemic.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Cecil’s memory may be made to St. John’s UCC 332 Old Sulphur Spring Road Manchester, MO 63021.
