Ashlea Rhea Betzen-Miyauchi, age 39, died Sunday, November 24, 2019 in the arms of her parents, Ted and Kathy Betzen.

Ashlea was an unexpected blessing to Ted and Kathy while Ted was still in Vet School at K-State. She was the beloved only-child for five wonderful years until she was quickly joined by Michael, Hillary, and Brianna Betzen. She quickly learned how to rule the roost and direct young ones around.

Ashlea had a life-long love of academia which led her to Coe College and eventually to Harvard Divinity School. Piles of books on physics and world religion seemed to follow her wherever she went. Travels brought her to Japan, where she taught English, and met her husband, Naoki Miyauchi. Up until the very end, she continued to teach English and share her love of learning at Missouri State University.

She combined her two passions, bossing people around and learning, into motherhood. She is survived by her twin sons, Kay and Sho Miyauchi, who will grow up to find a detailed quest laid out for them on how to find the buried treasure.

Join us in celebrating her life. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 am Saturday, November 30, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2200 W. Republic Road in Springfield, Missouri with Msgr. Thomas Reidy officiating. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday followed by a luncheon.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri.

Ashlea was truly a special person, with her joy in life and the grace with which she handled the circumstances life brought her. When we arrived in Japan for the beginning of our stay there, she showed us the ropes and acted as an unofficial tour guide. Later through our years there we appreciated so much having a family member nearby, as we didn't have that anywhere else we lived. It meant a great deal for me and my girls to be able to have outings with Ashlea and her family, and to have them visit our home. She always brought laughter and wit with her. We will miss her.

Our daughter, Timaree Walsh Sorlie began in the Springfield Catholic School System at IC when she was in first grade. Ashlea was one of the first two girls I remember from the very start. She was stunning! The first time I saw her with her perfectly fixed, beautiful blond hair and precious baby face I knew she was a really special little girl. And she was. She was always so kind and always seemed to have a peaceful manner.
She was one in a class of brilliant children. I am so proud to learn of the amazing person she became.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had the great fortune of meeting Ashlea when she was a student at Harvard and working in Lamont Library. She was funny, exuberant, sly, and brilliant. She was smart in a sort of sneaky way, and she never bragged about it, but we eventually discovered that she had published a thesis in chemistry and another in theology. We created an authority record for her so that future researchers wouldn't get confused -- a way to tell people in the future that yes, she really was a brilliant polymath.

The world is dimmer now.
