Obituary for Charles William Harman

Charles William  Harman
Charles William Harman, 87, of Springfield, MO passed away on February 1, 2018.
He was born on September 30, 1930 to Charley Leonidas Harman and Jeanette
“Nettie” Harman in La Porte, Iowa.  His sister, Patricia Ann Robinson and his
parents preceded him in their death.   He is survived by his nieces, Rebecca
Wood (Eric) of Escondido, CA, Jenita Gumiensky (Joseph) of Meridian, ID, and
Mary Robinson Cary (Steven) of Fairbanks, AK.  Also surviving Charles are his
nieces children. 

Charles’ family returned to Missouri when he was a toddler and resided on a
family farm several years before relocating to southern Springfield, near the
former Southern Missouri State (SMS) University, currently the southern area
of the campus of Missouri State University.  He attended Greenwood High 
School.  His fellow students nominated Charles to hold the title of Mr.
Greenwood his senior year.  Following in his father, Charley’s footsteps, he
attended the Missouri University of Science and Technology at Rolla, formerly
Missouri School of Mines, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Civil Engineering.   

In the early 1950’s, after graduation from Missouri University of Science and
Technology at Rolla, Charles enlisted and served honorably in the United States
Navy, Naval Construction Battalions (CBs), better known as the Seabees.  He was
stationed in Cuba followed by French Morocco in North Africa.  In French
Morocco, he and his fellow service men built an airport and concrete block airport
building.  
 
He resided in Huntington Park, California and worked in Vernon for a few months
after his military service before returning to Springfield.  
 
Charles career with Burlington Northern Railroad spanned many years until his
retirement, when he finally could return to his childhood home and reside there
year round.   

Many summers in his retirement Charles vacationed in Paris, France and enjoyed
sitting at the fountain in front of the Louvre Museum, reading his favorite
newspaper and Forbes Magazine.   He also enjoyed annual attendance at the
French Open Tennis Tournament. Many years he attended the Wimbledon 
Tennis competition in England.  In his younger years he was an avid tennis player.
He also enjoyed travel to visit family and participate in family reunions. 

His home in Springfield with membership in a local country club provided a first
class environment for his life with good friends, festive planned events, and fine
dining. Many years he dined there for lunch.  His family was happy Charles shared
the ambiance of Highland Springs with them.    

Funeral gravesite services with military honors will be held on Wednesday,
February 7, 2018, at 11:00 AM at White Chapel Cemetery, 5234 W. State Highway
EE, Springfield, MO  65802 in the Garden of The Last Supper.
