Shannon Burns

Matt was my brother's best friend. I didn't spend as much time with Matt as many people who are grieving him did, but he made a tremendous impression on me because when I was around him it was so clear how much he wanted to make other people feel comfortable and happy and good about themselves. This was true of him even as a teenager, when most people, even kind people, let their own self-consciousness insulate them from other people's feelings. It can't have been easy for Matt to be as good as he was, but he was, and I'm grateful I got to see it.
